Holy crap man. Lately, I've been getting more cold telephone calls from collection agencies trying to "get their foot in my door" than ever before. I'm an OC now with tons of account, but it's hard not to be rude to callers when I get 5-10 per day from all over the country. In another life I was an agency owner, and I know that many of these companies should be ashamed of how their sales ditch calls are coming out. Most of these callers sound like they've got a mouth full of yesterdays roast beef when they talk, and they completely lack confidence in their pitch. They get to me, verify that I am the decision maker, and then they sound like their whole friggin' life depends on getting a sale and they just loose it. They fumble around with their words like Warren Moon and they just can't get it out of their mouth. It is sometimes entertaining. I asked a caller the other day if he thought he was doing a good job making his pitch, and he said "no", that he just started the job and honestly didn't have a clue what he was doing. I asked him (very respectfully by the way) if he received the same call from me, would he trust 10's of millions of dollars with me? He said "No, I understand what you mean", and hung up.

I'm okay with hearing a good pitch - hell, I might even be interested now and then...Even if I don't use you, somebody I know might. But I won't give you 10 seconds past your introduction if you sound like today is your first day or if you can't/won't/don't speak good english. Get with it group.

T

SALES & MARKETING FOLDER: Dos and Do Nots

The Sales & Marketing folder is NOT a free advertising free-for-all. My poor moderating gave that impression; for that I am sorry.

The Sales & Marketing is a venue to discuss sales and marketing strategies for your own business. A nice guideline is that most of the new topics in this folder should be along the lines of, "Hey, what's the best way to...?" or "Have any of you had any luck [blank]?" (where "blank" is a gerand of some kind).

Responses should also either be in that similar form, or offer advice. That advice can, within reason, sometimes be, "Hey, we have a product you might find useful." But, as soon as it starts to look like all-commercial-all-the-time in here, I'll delete like the dickens.

I'd rather not resort to the "Moderator Approval" model currently running on the Consumer folder. I'll trust that you'll do your best; I'll gently (at first) let you know if you aren't doing your best. If you have a question about whether something should be posted here or not, you can send me an email. (PM would work, too; however, emails tend to get to me faster.)

Hello all. I have had an agency for a little over a year, and I'm looking to start a true sales department. I was wondering if anyone could give advice on the type of sells people that I should be looking for? What I mean is, What types of background in sells should I be interested in interviewing? Is there any type of commission structures that I can somewhat base my sales reps on? I know very little about sells other than what I have been doing to build up my business. Is there any books out their that I should purchase? Just looking for a little help/guidance in this area.
