Back in the day, when I was a third party collector, I was very good at my job. My numbers were always consistently higher than any other collector on the floor and typically by 40-60%. Bottom line, I made money for the agency owners I worked for. I never needed "gimmicks" to motivate me, I never asked for a raise (I knew how to get more money) and declined a "base" wherever possible opting for straight commission.

However, I was in pain in the butt. Usually late coming in 10-20min, left early often, not very social with coworkers and did not clean outside my immediate area. (You want someone to clean, hire a maid) It normally boiled down to that the agency owners I worked for loved me and "overlooked" my kwerks, supervisors hated me.

So now in your opinion, what is a better person to have on staff? Is it a high performer with a bad attitude or an okay performer but followed all the rules to the letter?

In the far distant past of the 1950s credit was defined as ability to pay, willingness to pay, faith and trust. Past due A/R management was called Collections...the enforcement of payment.

And Credit Managers were either big guys with low foreheads, long arms and jailhouse tatoos, or book keeper types with green eye shades and ten key calculators.

Performance was measured by DSO (days sales outstanding) and bad debt write offs; the lower the numbers the better the performance. And then things changed.

Unlike the 1950s when Americans had money in the bank or in war bonds and when there was a shortage of goods creating a seller's market, modern companies today must deal with a saturation of goods as well as international competition, big box stores, and cyber competitors. And today the average American is spending $1.25 for every buck they earn.

Today's Credit Managers who focus on DSO and bad debt do so at their own peril , and their company's peril .
Today smart CEOs know that Credit is a lubricant of commerce and is about profitable sales that would otherwise be lost. They know that past due A/R Management is the Completion of The Sale, about keeping customers current and buying..again and again.

Today Credit Managers are told that their performance will be based on finding ways to say yes to profitable sales . They are measured by the number of credit customer buying not on the number on credit hold and unable to buy.

The future of Credit Managers is bright for some and not others. Those Managers who understand that the top job of any real business manager is to seek constant improvement; that a business manager not focused on improvement risks becoming an administrator at best and a beaurcrat at worst...will do well.

With the invaluable and practical knowledge gained from working with customers, sales, finance, operations, vendors, warehouses, attorneys...their and ours..future Customer/Sales Support Managers will report to the CEO and besides overseeing the Credit function they will also manage the old Customer Service and Operations functions.

Or will they be absorbed by Sales or Customer Service?
